Why does the US government say that there are only a few US Abrams tank losses during the Iraq war?

no tanks were destroyed due to enemy action. some were disabled, but the armor was never breached, and all crews survived. one even survived two direct hits with 125mm high explosive anti tank rounds fired into the side of the tank. the tank stalled, but was able to be restarted, and drove away under its' own power.
