Why is Africa so poor?

Why are all the Black nations so poor? This is for my sociology cl. I have a research paper on the poverty of Africa and the cause of it. Even South American countries like Mexico and Peru and Venezuela are richer than Africa. Why? If Africans have been on Earth the longest then how come after 1000000 years they are still dirt poor?
