Indian democracy continues to flourish inspite of increasing criminalisation and corruption. Why?

There is a growing public feeling that some of our politicians are very corrupt and have criminal background. Still people have tremendous faith in the democratic system of governance and this system has taken deep roots in our country. What are the reasons for this paradox?
