To Those Who Have Seen "The Dark Knight" (SPOILER ALERT!!!)

Did Harvey really die at the end from the fall, or was he just knocked out? It was really confusing to me at the end; was his funeral just a cover-up if he didn't die? I'm guessing that way the people of Gotham wouldn't know what truly happened to him.
